Dungeon Crawler Carl Wiki

You will not break me. You will not fucking break me.

Carl is the titular protagonist of Dungeon Crawler Carl. A former coast guardsman, Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat are now fan-favorite crawlers on the Syndicate gameshow, Dungeon Crawler World: Earth.

Description[]

Before entering the Dungeon, Carl was a 27-year-old U.S. Coast Guard veteran who worked as a marine technician "fixing electrical systems for rich assholes and their party boats."[1] He shared a two-bedroom apartment in Seattle, WA, with his girlfriend Beatrice and her award-winning cat, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk. He hit the gym three times a week and enjoyed playing Call of Duty on PlayStation with his friend Monobrow Sam while Donut sat in his lap.[2][3] He survived the Transformation because Donut escaped the apartment when he cracked open the window to smoke and he went outside to search for her, equipped only with his leather coat, boxers, Bea's ill-fitting pink Croc sandals, a Zippo lighter, and half a pack of Marlboro Red cigarettes.[4][3]

In the Dungeon, Carl focuses primarily on hand-to-hand combat and explosives. After reaching the Third Floor, he selects the Primal race and the unique monk/rogue hybrid class of Compensated Anarchist Class, which the System AI aptly describes as "a trapmaking, bomb-making, social-media dynamo" that "will happily throw a Molotov through a window one moment and step in front of a camera to plead for the violence to stop the next."[5] He takes the bomb-focused Agent Provocateur Class specialization on the Sixth Floor.[6]

Carl is the twenty-fifth holder of the Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook.

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 6
He chooses to worship Emberus on the Fifth Floor. On the Eighth Floor, he is promoted to the rank of "Devotee," which is the highest possible rank a crawler can attain unless they are a Cleric or Paladin class.[7] Earlier on the same floor, Carl was infected with SlugPox and chose to suppress it with the Enchanted Paupers Ring of the Steadfast Emberus rather than cure it. The ring, combined with the Super Spreader Benefit, allows Carl to stack debuffs and pass them to enemies and allies without feeling the effects.

Personality[]

Carl is a gruff man who has a strong sense of right and wrong. He also has grit, refusing to let the system break him. While not charismatic, he is the sort who will assume leadership if nobody else steps up. He is a loyal and trustworthy crawler, willing to take risks if he can help others, which engenders a great deal of loyalty from other crawlers. Many describe him as "crazy" due to the risks he takes and the creative, albeit half-baked, plans he hatches.

Carl is extremely resourceful, and has a knack for finding and exploiting loopholes. Although he doesn't view himself as particularly skilled in math, he is able to "fix most anything electrical after studying it for a bit."[8]

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 5
After Carl begins using the Enchanted Night Wyrm’s Ring of Divine Suffering on the Sixth Floor and receives the ominous You Crossed a Line You Didn't Even Know Was There Achievement, which alludes to "unintended and unadvertised side effects of using such a powerful and evil magical item," he begins mentioning a "river" in his mind: "Rushing, tumbling, crashing, getting faster and louder by the moment. It was starting to hurt. Just a little. That's okay. I'd rest later."[9][10]

Appearance[]

Carl is a human man, standing 6'3" tall and weighing 230lbs, with short brown hair and "one of those bodies that naturally held muscle well."[11][2] Even in the Dungeon, he shaves every day.[12] Katia Grim helps trim his hair.[11] Due to the effects of the Enchanted Pedicure Kit of the Sylph, which he begins using on the Second Floor, his bare feet are "shiny" and "glittery."[13]

Within an hour of entering the First Floor, Carl receives a Goblin Pass Tattoo on his left inner forearm, which he grumbles about because he had never wanted tattoos.[14][15] At the same time, he puts on the Enchanted Trollskin Shirt of Pummeling, attaches the Enchanted Nightgaunt Cloak of Stoutness to his leather coat (Mordecai later notes that it occupies his "neck" slot), and slips the Enchanted Toe Ring of the Splatter Skunk onto his right index toe.[15][16] He wears unenchanted fingerless gloves for approximately two days before punching a Slime, which dissolves the right glove and the right arm of his leather jacket.[17] Carl also gains a Desperado Pass Tattoo on his neck later on the floor.[18]

History[]

Carl's maternal grandfather played center for Oregon State before becoming a prison guard, and Carl's Mother stood at 5'10".[2] Carl's Father was a linebacker and heavily tattooed, mustachioed motorcycle enthusiast who physically and emotionally abused his family.[2][15][12] Carl inherited his father's features, particularly his nose and his hair, and keeps his face clean-shaven to minimize their resemblance.[12] He never had tattoos before the Dungeon because his father had them, and he didn't associate tattoos with being cool.[15]

When his father had his raucous friends over, Carl's Mother would lock Carl in the basement for hours with nothing but a 1981 Frogger Arcade Cabinet for company. Carl spent hours playing the game, reaching a high score of 879,460.[15] Although he desperately wanted a bike, young Carl also enjoyed lining toy cars up on a fence outside and trying to knock them down with his slingshot, until his father and his friends broke the slingshot's band. Although his father promised to get Carl a new one, he never did.[13]

On Carl's fifteenth birthday, Carl's mother attempted to kill both herself and his father.[19] Due to the circumstances of her death, Carl associates the sound of dripping and running water with death. Soon after entering the Dungeon, he likens the barely-audible sound of the "Remaining Crawler" count to "water fast-dripping from a faucet."[18]

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 6
Carl's father walked away a few months later (following the "you're a bully and no one likes you" exchange), leaving Carl alone just before his sophomore year of high school started. He went to school as though nothing had happened, and Monobrow Sam brought him food when he ran out. After the power went out, the state took him into custody and police interrogated him on the whereabouts of his father. The detective on the case offered Carl his first cigarette. When his father was found alive, the police stopped being so kind to him. Carl was shuffled off to a home, where he broke a kid's nose, and then sent to the ranch.[19]

Carl eventually moved to the Anacortes Boys' Ranch, where he lived until his eighteenth birthday. The home required its tenants to get summer jobs, and he spent one summer in his late teens working on a small farm that contained multiple types of goats, including Boer goats like Prepotente.[20] He spent the night after his eighteenth birthday, but only that night, at a homeless shelter n Seattle.[21]

At eighteen, Carl joined the US Coast Guard. As a coast guardsman, he received intensive firearm and hand-to-hand combat training. He spent most of his time aboard a cutter as a Machinery Technician (MK), but was never involved in any real law enforcement.[22] In his free hours, he read books and played Pathfinder and Dungeons and Dragons; the last time he played D&D was aboard the USCGC Stratton[4][23].

After leaving the US Coast Guard, he found a well-paying position doing electrical repairs as a Marine Technician and began dating Beatrice.[4] He had a bicycle that he sometimes rode to work.[24]
